MARK Davies, Lancaster City Council's head of city council (direct) services, has issued this statement in response to Ben Ruth: "Lancaster City Council does not need to be shamed into taking action to make the district a cleaner place because it is already a priority.
"The additional investment the council has made in improved standards of cleansing has already made a huge difference to the cleanliness of the district. We have reached the point where we need to get the point across to the minority who try to spoil things for the rest of us.
"In the last 12 months around 20 fixed penalty notices have been issued by council officers and Police Community Support Officers to people who think they can throw their litter about wherever they like.
"Hundreds of warning notices have been served to people who cause litter by leaving waste out on the wrong day for collection. Numerous investigations have taken place into incidents of fly tipping.
"Very shortly two further waste/cleansing enforcement officers will start work to supplement the existing environment enforcement officer and the PCSOs that the council contributes to.
"Lancaster City Council is not prepared to put up with people who want to spoil the district."
