A LANCASTER mother has died a week after she was involved in a car collision on the Heysham Bypass.

Katerina Howden, 31, died at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on Sunday.

Her husband of seven years, Simon Howden, 43, was also killed when their Skoda car collided with another on the Heysham Bypass on Saturday, February 23.

The couple's twenty-three-month-old daughter Amalka died in hospital on Wednesday.

Bela Howden, seven, is still being treated in Pendlebury Children's hospital where her condition is 'improving' but she is still 'very poorly'.

Four-year-old Olen Howden has been discharged from hospital and is now being cared for by his family.

Diane Helme, 48, of Heysham, also died as a result of the collision.

This is a very upsetting story and my deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved, however I'm surprised this is the first accident of this scale on this road.

Drivers constantly overtake in the face of oncoming traffic on this road, something needs to be done to prevent this, be it speed cameras or traffic islands, otherwise it is only a matter of time until we hear of another tragic accident on this scale.

As the correct facts of this accident are not yet public, should there be more mention of Diane Helme, and condolences made to her family. Not just one line ?

I think it is very insensitive of the the person metioning about who has had more news input or not enough news coverage. The true news covered were correct and I think there no malice or unintentional one sided report. Remaining unattach to this tragic accident I wonder if anyone else out there would feel the same. The families and friends of Helme and Howden do not really need this insensitive comment. It is a very traumatic time for everyone connected - this type of comment is not helpful. We pray and remember th beautiful people we have lost and we have been very lucky to have been part of their lives. Pray for the two children still recovering, families and friends. May they be protected and find strength two carry on.

today, 10th May 2008 we were flying from Manchester to Bratislava. at the airport we met a nice lady with two children (Olen, Bela with their grandmother). later on she told us the story about the car accident. we were absolutely shocked and we still can not stop thinking of it. as we did not have much time, we did not ask her for any contact details. therefore, we would like to ask anybody who knows them, to send us their address/email or phone no. to Olomouc (where they are currently staying) or Lancaster. we would like to know how they are doing...
pls write at: radim_uri@yahoo.com or call 00421 905 878708 (slovakia)
thank you very much. tomas and valery from Piestany, slovakia
